20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

Prof. Yunus was at hand in Berlin to attend the 20th year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall celebrations at Brandenburg Gate, along with such high-profile public figures such as Angela Merkel (Chancellor of Germany), Nicolas Sarkozy (President of France), Gordon Brown (Prime Minister of Britain), Hillary Clinton (Secretary of State of the USA), Mikhail Gorbachev (previous President of the Soviet Union), among others.

A large wall made up of 1,000 individual domino pieces was erected in the days leading up to the event, which reached from Potsdamer Platz to the Brandenburg Gate. The domino pieces represented the Berlin Wall which was finally brought down 20 years ago - and the end of the evening was marked by the cascading toppling of the dominoes, one on top of the other.

After the various political representatives gave their formal speeches in front of a large crowd gathered under the rain, Prof. Yunus was the last to speak before the last of the dominoes fell, as he addressed the millions of viewers on TV in Germany and around the world, as he entreated them, "Lasst uns gemeinsam die Armut ins Museum bringen" ("Let us work together to bring poverty into the museums").

Prof. Yunus giving an interview at Brandenburg Gate, streamed live on large screens in the city, as well as live across all of Germany's main tv channels.
