Through a mother's eyes: My first impressions of Bangladesh

By Deirdre Schuitemaker

The week in Bangladesh was very interesting and had a big impact on me. I have already been travelling a lot in my life, but this was the first time that I travelled being a mother. And somehow, this is different.

I saw every street child, every sick or disabled child, every child with eyes without hope. Their images directly touched my heart. I saw all the young mothers, carrying their babies. They must have the same wishes as I have: giving their children a good and healthy youth, education and most of all chances for their future.

It is really good to see that the Grameen Bank makes a difference. Offering loans means offering chances for the future of children. It maintains the dignity of the mothers at the same time, so that they can be a good example for their children. I was so impressed by a mother who has already been able to offer her daughter a university education. They were both so proud!

I think the social business concept is a good concept to spread around the world. That it can really mean the difference for the future generation...
